So, basically, my church (Gracious Ark Church, Los Angeles) has been hosting a non-profit 6 week summer school program (8:30am-5:00pm) for underprivileged children K through 8th every summer for the past 4 years. This year would be the fifth. Starting from the first year ending with last year, we admitted 40, 70, 100, and 140 students.

Monday-Thursday — We provide tutoring in reading, writing, and math (according to the level the students will be taking the following academic year). In addition to academics, we also provide what we like to call “special activities,” where students have opportunities they may never have had before. They can learn: how to play a variety of instruments (ranging from guitars, flutes, recorders to even hand bells), basic animation, art, sports (team and individual), etc.

Friday is reserved for field trips. In the past, we have taken the students (yes, ALL of them) to parks, the beach, museums, movie theaters, and more. We’re always searching for new possibilities!

Breakfast, snack, and lunch are provided everyday for all of the students.

Again, all of this is non-profit. The first 4 years we had a registration fee of $80, more than just a good deal for a 6 week summer program. Even this wasn’t enough, but we got by with donations. However, this year, we’ve gotten rid of that registration fee so we can take in people who are even needier. Instead of a registration fee, we asked parents to make a donation according to their financial situation. To be blunt, we’re short on money and volunteer teachers this year. If anyone reading this post can help out in any way (monetary donation, food donation, volunteering, etc.) please email arkschool11@gmail.com. [*If applicable, please note that the church is located in southern Los Angeles, near the intersection of the 10 and 110 freeways]. ANY help is much appreciated! Please reblog and inform other people who may be able to help out!

Thanks much!
